Visiting Researcher in Design

 

General information


The department of design offers a visiting researcher in design positions for postdoctoral researchers and doctoral students. The position is open to researchers from all countries.

The department of design hosts maximum of four visiting researchers in design per semester, depending on the overall situation in the department. The position is unfunded.

Visiting researcher in design is for a full semester position or a full academic year. The applicant may indicate a particular time period of the visit in the application form.

Visiting researcher is expected to undertake research and publication in collaboration with department of design personnel and independent research. S/he is expected to prepare a lecture about the research topic within two weeks of arrival and may be asked to contribute to the teaching of the design department. Visiting researcher is also expected to participate in departmental meetings. The researcher will have to sign a visiting researcher contract with the Aalto University School of Art and Design before arrival.

The visiting researcher in design will be provided working space, it-services, access to the library services, opportunity to participate the department’s events, and interact with staff and other fellows/researchers. Additionally s/he will be part of a larger research community of Aalto University. The school will help to arrange housing for the visiting researcher in design.

Application procedures


Two annual application deadlines, 15 March and 15 September. The applicants are expected to start within a year from the application time. Please indicate the period of your stay in the application form.

(2) Research plan (max length 3-5 pages) including:

  • name of applicant, title of research project, site of research
  • general description of the research (background, objectives, resources, expected outcomes, ethical issues, research permits)
  • aim of the visit, its links to the applicant’s research more widely, research to be done during the visit
  • financial plan of the visit

The decision will be announced two months later via email and letter to the applicant. Shortly after, the admitted visiting researchers in design will be introduced in the Aalto University, School of Art and Design’s website news.
