The aim of the research is to investigate the use of landscape for the scenography of a theatre performance with minimal physical alteration. The study relies on data gathered from three open-air performances in found environments in Estonia. The study argues that the process, in which scenography borrows the body of a landscape, can be understood through the concept of play. A play creates a fictional environment that does not, however, cancel its experience in the real context. In play objects and environments can be viewed as temporal agreements that last for the time of the play and are shared by the participants. However, it is the fictional layer that participates in the making of meaning. The analysis showed that the aesthetic experience of a play environment is a form of aesthetic engagement: a multisensory involvement with the immediate environment.
