The study explores the idea of maintaining tradition in the context of craft and design, based on the view that tradition can be beneficial for contemporary lives. Research has shown that traditional knowledge and artefacts that have been inherited through generations often demonstrate an excellent quality in use and design, reflecting a harmony between aesthetics and function.

The study proposes a concept of Transformation of Tradition, the idea of which is to keep old but valuable traditions alive and sustainable by making them suitable for contemporary lives. A series of design projects and workshops were conducted during the research process, the main result being a model called ATUMICS method (acronym from Artefact – Technique – Utility – Material – Icon – Concept – Shape). The ATUMICS method is intended to be used as a tool for artists, craftspeople, designers, and art-design students to assist their work when dealing with maintaining traditions.
