Helena Hyvönen has worked as Professor of Textile Design since 1998 at the University of Art and Design Helsinki (TaiK). In 1999, Professor Hyvönen was appointed Head of the Department of Textile Art, Fashion and Clothing, after which she took an appointment to lead the School of Design as Dean since 2003. On 1 April 2008 Dean Helena Hyvönen was elected Rector for the University of Art and Design Helsinki. Professor Hyvönen was appointed Executive Dean of the Aalto University School of Art and Design beginning on January 2010.
Dean Helena Hyvönen graduated from TaiK in 1974. After graduation, she worked in the Finnish textile industry as head designer and manager. Helena Hyvönen has specilized in industrial textile design. Her design company Hydestudiot Ltd. (1997–2006) operated in the field of material development, colour design, and forecasting trends.
Helena Hyvönen was awarded with a five-year-grant for artists in 1998. Textile Artists – Texo nominated her as the Textile Artist of the Year in 1997. Ms Hyvönen has designed industrial textiles and unique pieces of textile art which are on show in various public spaces.
Helena Hyvönen has held several posts working internationally in industry and trade, associations and university co-operation. During her career she has held numerous positions of trust, for example in The Arts Council of Finland, SITRA – The Finnish Innovation Fund, Turku 2011 Culture Capital Delegation, Executive Committee of Design Museum Helsinki and Finnish Business and Policy Forum – EVA. She has been an active exponent of the Design industry and generator of training of textile art. The Students’ Union TOKYO at TaiK named Helena Hyvönen as the Teacher of the Year in 2007 with her special credential being a promoter for open social discussion.
